Slot 8: Dissonant Worlds - ROOTS

Check out 'How Shall We Greet the Sun', 'Schaduw van de Groene Dageraad', and 'The Elephant & The Room' in this slot at ROOTS Film Festival 2024.

Slot 8: Dissonant World consists of the following films:

How Shall We Greet The Sun (Thana Faroq) - This film explores the complex memories of women migrants, intertwining two poignant recollections: one from a friend in a refugee camp and another from the filmmaker's mother in Yemen. Through these memories, the film reflects on how past experiences of joy and loss shape identity, belonging, and the emotional exile that arises from the collision of these memories. Arabic spoken. 4 minutes.

Schaduw van de Groene Dageraad (Hiba Darras, Jordi Welschen) - A cult-member must choose between following his gut and trusting the people who have become his only family. Dutch spoken. 6 minutes.

The Elephant & The Room (Anas Qadamani) MTM curates - The Elephant & The Room is an essay film that examines the intersection of immigration, colonialism, and Western double standards, using the bizarre news of African elephants illegally migrating to Germany as a starting point. Through four chapters, the film delves into the colonial history between Western Europe and Africa, critiquing the political systems that perpetuate violence and inequality. English spoken. 14 minutes. TRIGGER WARNING: this film contains graphic images of war.

All films will be shown with English subtitles. The screening in Zaal 2 includes a Q&A with the makers, moderated by Filmhuis Den Haag.

Curated by Movies that Matter

Movies that Matter is an international film festival focused on films that address social issues and promote societal change. This year, the festival has selected two films from the ROOTS Film Festival lineup, highlighting the importance of social justice and human rights. 'The Elephant & the Room' is one of them:

''This bold essay film shades light on colonial practices throughout history, leading up to current times where the mechanism of (modern) colonialism are unraveled. The film paints a harsh and dark parallelism between Western Neo Colonialism and the violation of human rights. For MTM a reason to program the film, in the hope to stimulate the dialogue on political systems and mechanics of neocolonialism at the base of current conflicts.''
