Slot 6: Human Nature - ROOTS

Check out 'Perpetual Radiance', 'The Blind Point', and 'In the Trace of Tilled Stones' in this slot at ROOTS Film Festival 2024.

Slot 6: Human Nature consists of the following films:

Perpetual Radiance (Michela Meliddo) - Perpetual Radiance is a short film set in a future where artificial light has completely replaced the night sky, leaving only the glow of ALAN (Artificial Light at Night). The film combines a fictional narrative with field research footage from the Netherlands, creating a surreal atmosphere that prompts reflection on the gradual disappearance of the natural night. English spoken. 14 minutes.

The Blind Point (Dario di Paolantonio) - The Blind Point is a philosophical reflection that explores the world of ticks, encouraging a shift in perspective to understand the strange, interconnected nature of life. Through microscopic visuals and a forest walk, the film challenges the boundary between humans and non-humans, questioning the limits of imagination and representation. English spoken. 11 minutes.

In the Trace of Tilled Stones (Nesie Junyi Wang) MTM curates - In the Trace of Tilled Stones examines the paradoxical relationship between mine workers and the land at the Dexing Copper Mine in China, where workers continue to garden on soil made infertile by years of mining. Through the juxtaposition of mining and gardening, the film explores the miners' reflections on their dual roles and complex connection to the degraded landscape. Mandarin Chinese spoken. 20 minutes.

All films will be shown with English subtitles. The screening in Zaal 5 includes a Q&A with the makers, moderated by Filmhuis Den Haag.

Curated by Movies that Matter

Movies that Matter is an international film festival focused on films that address social issues and promote societal change. This year, the festival has selected two films from the ROOTS Film Festival lineup, highlighting the importance of social justice and human rights. 'In the Trace of Tilled Stones' is one of them:

"This well-made film, paints a universal picture of the dynamics between human kind and nature. The focus is on the paradoxical relationship a group of miners turned gardeners have with the land. A land they have first exploited and made infertile and toxic through their mining practices, which they now grown and harvest. For MTM this short film encapsulates the absurdity of human kinds relationship to the environment lead by financial gain, while also encouraging a move back to our roots and the healing of our planet."
