Filmmaker Frank Pavich explores one of cinema's greatest "what ifs" in this documentary about Alejandro Jodorowsky's aborted film adaptation of Frank Herbert's famous science fiction novel, Dune.
With El Topo (1970) and the psychedelic follow-up The Holy Mountain (1973), Jodorowsky not only pioneered psychedelic surrealism in film but also became the father of the "Midnight Movie" phenomenon. After the success of these two films, the Chilean director focused all his energy on bringing Dune to the silver screen. Jodorowsky's own son, Brontis, was set to star in the film alongside a stunning cast including Orson Welles, David Carradine, Mick Jagger, and Salvador Dali. Pink Floyd was slated to compose the score, and the art direction was in the hands of H.R. Giger and Jean "Moebius" Giraud.
However, two years after an enormous production effort, the film was abruptly and unceremoniously canceled. Yet, remnants of that ambitious production endure even today—including thousands of vividly enticing storyboards. In this film, Pavich offers cinephiles a tantalizing glimpse into a masterpiece that was never meant to be.

Met El Topo (1970) en de psychedelische opvolger The Holy Mountain (1973) was Jodorowsky niet alleen een pionier op het gebied van psychedelisch surrealisme in de film, maar werd hij ook de vader van het fenomeen "Midnight Movie". In deze film biedt Pavich cinefielen een verleidelijke blik in een meesterwerk dat nooit bedoeld was om te zijn.
