Glued & Screwed #23

Curated with and around the work of visual artist Kyulim Kim, this program marks a rare opportunity to see a unique selection of experimental art films on the big screen.

Curated with and around the work of visual artist Kyulim Kim, this experimental short film program features a rare selection of her works plus the Dutch premiere of Magenta, which forms part of her newest installation called 600minutes which recently opened at the Arko Art Center in Seoul. Contextualizing her work will be three films by other artists personally selected by Kyulim in an effort to suggest a dialogue between films, such as Morning After the Deluge (US, 2005) by Paul Pfeiffer, Köln Waves/Blues (PS/US, 2005) by Seth Price, and The Woolworths Choir of 1979 (UK, 2005) by Elizabeth Price.

For most of the films in the program, this marks a first and ultra rare opportunity to experience them on the big screen — an experience you don't want to miss! Kyulim will be present at the screening for a Q&A where we will discuss the program and her work.

This edition we will screen the following films:

A Wobbling Shadow (Part 1) (The Netherlands, 2024, 3') by Kyulim Kim

A Wobbling Shadow is an attempt to explore the physical limitations of a 16mm camera by capturing the moment the sun disappears below the horizon and a rotating lighthouse emitting light in a repetitive cycle, using two cameras in succession.

White Hole (Spain, 2024, 4:30' + 11' + 2:30') by Kyulim Kim

Originally an installation, White Hole was composed of three projectors, and explores the theme of disappearance, revealing through the choreographed movement of the camera the trajectories of disappearance and emission of matter in the contexts of black and white holes. During filming, the drone fell into the water, causing the footage to be lost. The remaining cache files were then printed onto 16mm film, physically translating the loss and residual traces of the digital image. The movement of the emitted material was subsequently recreated with a digital camera and printed onto 16mm film. Simultaneously, the filming location—an abandoned mine—was captured in 16mm from a different perspective. The work highlights the interplay between various technical mediums and recording methods, while examining the materiality of space, technical constraints, and the interconnectedness of images.

600 Minutes: Magenta (The Netherlands, 2025, 6”) by Kyulim Kim

This film was part of Kyulim Kim’s time-based installation 600 Minutes (2025), based on the restoration of Rembrandt's The Night Watch. The painting darkened over time due to pigment discoloration. Similarly, 1950s–70s film footage often fades to magenta as yellow and cyan dyes deteriorate. This color loss reflects both the material fragility of film and the fading of social infrastructures once captured in it.

Morning After the Deluge (excerpt) - (United States, 2005, 5') by Paul Pfeiffer

Typically presented as a large-scale, single-projection video installation directed onto a free-standing screen, Morning After the Deluge features two pieces of real-time footage that the artist filmed in Cape Cod, Massachusetts that are merged together. In this program, the artist kindly permitted us to select a one-of-a-kind excerpt from the work to be presented as part of tonight's film program. “The viewer is torn between two contradictory realities coexisting on a single picture plane. There is the reality of the sun rising and setting behind the earth’s horizon and the opposing reality of the earth’s horizon moving across the surface of the sun.”

Köln Waves/Blues (Palestine, United States, 2005-2008, 12') by Seth Price

A digital version of the 2006, silent, 16mm film Untitled Film/Right, combined with a soundtrack originally created as a stand-alone audio piece in 2005. This abstract experimental film by New York-based artist Seth Price beguiles you with mesmerizing technicolor waves of visually manipulated renders of a rocky sea.

The Woolworths Choir of 1979 (United Kingdom, 2012, 20') by Elizabeth Price

Structured in three episodes, The Woolworths Choir is a choreographed stitching together of archival-photographs of Gothic churches and captions from art-historical documents, a musical interlude accompanying low resolution, internet-streamed video and film recordings of musical performances, and the the events of a fatal fire in a Manchester department store.
