Visions of the Future

STARTING OCTOBER 25TH AT FILMHUIS DEN HAAG

Programmer Thomas about Visions of the Future

"In 100 years... we will have flying cars"

A look into the future through the lens of the past: this is Visions of the Future. During the month of november we present a curated selection of contemporary sci-fi films that dive into a broad amount of differences about the genre. Journey across time, space and nostalgic imagination as these films challenge our perceptions and offer new and somewhat utterly unrealistic perspectives of the nearby and far away future.

In Juan Piquer Simón’s bizarre and unforgettable Extraterrestrial Visitors (1983), a family of furry, snorkel-nosed aliens arrive on Earth, only to stumble into a chaotic encounter with poachers, a vacationing rock band, and a boy searching for a new friend. While billed as a "kids movie," its mix of violence and sentimentality makes it one of the wildest and most unconventional films inspired by E.T., forever cementing its place in cult cinema, particularly after being featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Space Monster Wangmagwi (1967) is a South Korean kaiju film, the second giant monster movie made in South Korea and the first feature-length one. Aliens from another world invade Earth with flying saucers, unleashing a towering, destructive monster named Wang Ma Gwi, who decimates everything in his path with a powerful death ray. Long thought to be lost, the film was rediscovered only a few years ago, making it a true holy grail among kaiju fans. With its local cast and crew, this thrilling piece of cinematic history offers a rare glimpse into Korea's early vision of cosmic threats and resilience.

La Jetée (1962), directed by Chris Marker, is a groundbreaking sci-fi film that tells a haunting story of memory and time travel through still images. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the film’s minimalist style and thought-provoking narrative have influenced major sci-fi works like 12 Monkeys. A must-see for film lovers, La Jetée is a timeless masterpiece that continues to captivate with its depth and innovation.

This screening is proudly sponsored by the Institut Français.
