André Masson, specialist in moderne kunst, ontvangt een brief waarin staat dat er in Mulhouse een schilderij van Egon Schiele is ontdekt. Hij ontdekt dat het werk al sinds 1939 vermist is. Deze ontdekking brengt zijn carrière in gevaar.
André Masson is een specialist in moderne kunst en veilingmeester bij het beroemde veilinghuis Scottie's. Wanneer hij hoort dat er in het plaatsje Mulhouse een schilderij is ontdekt van Egon Schiele is hij aanvankelijk sceptisch, maar toch nieuwsgierig reist hij samen met zijn ex-vrouw en collega Bertina af om het werk te bekijken. Beide zijn met stomheid geslagen wanneer ze constateren dat het schilderij, een meesterwerk dat sinds 1939 vermist is en door de nazi's in beslag werd genomen, authentiek blijkt te zijn en nu in handen is van een nietsvermoedende jongeman en zijn moeder. André ziet de ontdekking van het schilderij als het hoogtepunt van zijn carrière, maar tegelijkertijd brengt het beroemde werk ook risico's met zich mee en zijn er meerdere kapers op de kust. Gelukkig wordt hij bijgestaan door Bertina en zijn wispelturige stagiaire Aurore. Op humoristische wijze benadrukt Pascal Bonitzer in Le Tableau Volé dat het in de kunstwereld vooral draait om geld. De Franse filmmaker die aan talloze films heeft meegewerkt en waarvan ook publicaties zijn verschenen in het gerenommeerde Les Cahiers du Cinéma castte voor zijn film bekende Franse acteurs als Léa Drucker (Close), Alex Lutz (Une nuit), Louise Chevillotte (L'événement, Benedetta), Nora Hamzawi (Doubles vies) en Arcadi Radeff (Passages). André Masson is a specialist in modern art and auctioneer at the famous auction house Scottie's. When he hears that a painting by Egon Schiele has been discovered in the town of Mulhouse, he is initially skeptical, yet curious, he travels with his ex-wife and colleague Bertina to view the work. Both are stunned when they find that the painting, a masterpiece that has been missing since 1939 and confiscated by the Nazis, turns out to be authentic and is now in the hands of an unsuspecting young man and his mother. André sees the discovery of the painting as the highlight of his career, but at the same time, the famous work also carries risks and there are several privateers on the coast. Fortunately, he is assisted by Bertina and his fickle intern Aurore. In Le Tableau Volé, Pascal Bonitzer humorously emphasizes that the art world is mostly about money. The French filmmaker who has collaborated on numerous films and whose publications have also appeared in the renowned Les Cahiers du Cinéma cast such well-known French actors as Léa Drucker (Close), Alex Lutz (Une nuit), Louise Chevillotte (L'événement, Benedetta), Nora Hamzawi (Doubles vies) and Arcadi Radeff (Passages) for his film.
