As the festive Chinese New Year celebration at the church approaches, choir singer Lin finds it increasingly difficult to hide her transgender daughter from the community in this short drama.
Lin (41) is preparing for her solo performance at the Chinese New Year celebration at her church. She wants to impress the community, but her mentor feels that her performance isn’t quite “hitting the mark.” He advises Lin to open up more, but that proves difficult. When rumors circulate about her son, who has not been attending church for some time, Lin faces a tough choice. Should she continue to hide or reveal her true self?
Guián
Throughout her life, filmmaker Nicole Chi Amén was unable to communicate with her grandmother Guián in words. Her grandmother never learned Spanish, and she never learned Chinese. After Guián’s passing, Nicole picks up her camera and travels to Guián’s hometown in China to visit those who knew her. Her footage becomes a love letter to the grandmother she knew and an imagined conversation with the grandmother she never knew.
Guián is an intimate exploration of heritage, told with beautiful and tender affection. It focuses on the linguistic differences that divide, but above all, the family bonds that connect. Chi Amén’s debut as a documentary filmmaker spans generations and continents, taking the audience on her personal journey to answer the questions she was never able to ask.

Wanneer de feestelijke Nieuwjaarsviering van de Chinese kerk nadert, wordt het voor koorzangeres Lin in dit korte drama steeds moeilijker om haar trans dochter voor de gemeenschap te verbergen. Lin (41) bereidt zich voor op haar solonummer voor de Chinese Nieuwjaarsviering bij haar kerk. Ze wil indruk maken op de gemeenschap, maar haar mentor vindt dat haar uitvoering nog niet echt 'raakt'. Hij adviseert Lin om zich werkelijk open te stellen, maar dat is moeilijk. Als er dan roddels rondgaan over haar zoon die al een tijd niet naar de kerk komt, staat Lin voor een lastige keuze. Blijft ze zich verstoppen of laat ze haar ware zelf zien?
Guián
Gedurende haar leven kon filmmaker Nicole Chi Amén niet in woorden communiceren met haar grootmoeder Guián. Haar grootmoeder leerde nooit Spaans, en zij nooit Chinees. Na het overlijden van Guián pakt Nicole haar camera op en reist naar Guiáns geboorteplaats in China om de mensen te bezoeken die Guián kenden. Haar beelden vormen een liefdesbrief aan de grootmoeder die ze kende en een denkbeeldig gesprek met de grootmoeder die ze niet kende. Guián is een intieme zoektocht naar afkomst, vertelt met een prachtige en liefdevolle tederheid. Het gaat over de taalkundige verschillen die scheiden, maar bovenal over de familiebanden die verbinden. Chi Améns debuut als documentairemaker overspant generaties en continenten, waarbij ze het publiek meeneemt op haar persoonlijke reis om de vragen te beantwoorden die ze nooit heeft kunnen stellen.
