Het onderzoekt de veranderingen in sociaal gedrag als gevolg van een alziende maatschappij en vindt zijn blijvende kracht in de mensen die vechten tegen het misbruik van de staatsmacht
De laatste jaren voelt de Chinese regering zich bedreigd door het toenemende activisme en de publieke verontwaardiging over de vertragende economie en de toenemende sociale problemen. Om deze gebeurtenissen tegen te gaan is China begonnen met de uitbreiding van een geavanceerd digitaal systeem over het hele land. Dit systeem, dat erop gericht is burgers te volgen en te controleren, hun gegevens te verzamelen en te analyseren en gedragingen te categoriseren als strafbaar of prijzenswaardig, hoopt politieke weerstand binnen de samenleving te voorspellen voordat het gebeurt. En sinds COVID wordt de pandemie misbruikt om een gatloos digitaal controlenet te installeren. De burgers worden 24/7 in de gaten gehouden zoals nooit eerder gedacht.

Total Trust takes a visceral look at digital control in China where unprecedented levels of state surveillance prevail through trust, fear, obedience and resistance. It aims to explore the changes of social behaviors caused by an all-seeing society and finds its lasting power in the people who are fighting against the abuse of state power.
In recent years, the Chinese government has felt its control threatened as activism and public outrage increase over a slowing economy and growing social issues. To counteract these events, China has started extending a sophisticated digital system across the country. Aimed at tracking and monitoring citizens, collecting, analyzing their data and categorizing behaviors as either punishable or commendable, this system hopes to predict political resistance within society before it happens. And since COVID the pandemic is abused to install a gapless digital control net. The citizens are monitored 24/7 as never imagined before.
We learn how this complex digital monitoring works through the people living under this surveillance - from ordinary people to people who have been particularly targeted by the government because of their critical thinking. Like lawyers and journalists.
Q&A with Arantxa Ortiz
Arantxa Ortiz is antropoloog en filmmaker. In haar werk doet ze onderzoek naar hoe de digitalisering van bureaucratie en identiteit de immobiliteitsomstandigheden voor niet-staatsburgers en immigranten heeft verhoogd en tegelijkertijd kansen heeft gecreëerd voor de opkomst van alternatieve identiteitsdatabases en infrastructuren. Haar onderzoek werd ondersteund door de Society for Visual Anthropology/Robert Lemelson Foundation Fellowship en haar artikelen zijn verschenen in American Anthropologist. Ze is co-redacteur van de Visual and New Media Review van de Society for Cultural Anthropology. Ze is momenteel promovendus in antropologie aan de Brandeis University en gastonderzoeker aan de Universiteit Leiden, en heeft een diploma in filosofie en taalkunde aan de University of California, Berkeley.

Arantxa Ortiz is an anthropologist and filmmaker. Her work examines how the digitalization of bureaucracy and identity has enhanced immobility conditions for non-citizens and immigrant residents while also creating opportunities for the emergence of alternative identity databases and infrastructures. Her research has been supported by a Society for Visual Anthropology/Robert Lemelson Foundation Fellowship, her writing has appeared in American Anthropologist. She serves as a co-editor for the Society for Cultural Anthropology's Visual and New Media Review. She is currently a PhD researcher in anthropology at Brandeis University and a guest researcher at Leiden University, and holds a degree in philosophy and linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley.
